Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and peripheral artery disease (PAD) are common manifestations of atherosclerosis that warrant aggressive secondary prevention strategies due to increased risk for subsequent heart attack, stroke, and sudden death. An identified gap in secondary preventive care indicates the need for increased effort to a) identify and recognize these patients as very high risk and b) optimize risk reduction strategies in these patient populations.
A discussion of the management of the major manifestations of atherothrombosis: Acute Coronary Syndromes and Peripheral Artery Disease Program 1 of this 3-part series, will be an interactive exchange by experts in the field discussing recognition, management, and prevention of secondary events in patients with ACS and PAD. This program will review pathophysiology; risk factors, including gender differences; and management of both syndromes. Evidenced-based goals and guideline-based treatment recommendations will be reviewed.
